Do you know what did he use to remove the debris and rust? Any strong chemical? I guess he did not use brushing?

Yes indeed. He uses "durgol" a strong Descaler--> It should NEVER be used to clean, enemal, nature stone,...
I warned him, the enemal is destroyed after seconds. Durgol is good for iron buckles, Alu, and so on. But it kills the color of buckles.

Very disappointing....he destroyed a potentially fantastic find
                What a shame

One cannot very well leave those contaminates on, it would end up getting eaten up just the same.
I metal detect, and often find coins that have been in the ground far longer than these.
They only cleaning method I use is warm water and a toothbrush - Of course, relic coins are not very comparable to medals, medals are far more challenging.

All in all i think he did a decent job, hopefully he will settle for a method a bit less caustic in the future - Concentrated steam + toothbrush may be an option.

Silverbrush is a must have (not only for coins also for enemaled items), destilled water, much time, maybe a ultrasonic cleaner (alos not for enemal) ... these methods are very gentle.

                    Cheers Pzb14
