Chris, that may be the case, but for 1st pattern Hollow, the red flag is the catch plate, and not the cut out.

i see a lot zinc pab with plate under the catch
and many with plate-repair , not forget

but "never" a 7 wheeler in this combination / open & plate / tombak or zinc

......That so much negative emphasis should be put on the nice finish. Look at the following link and tell me that if we were to use condition of finish as a barometer to gauge authenticity......then there is not a problem.

This question of pristine finish comes up every once in awhile, and I still do not understand why.

Some of the following badges have just as nice, or better, finishes.

Gauging any badge on it's total merits, or lack thereof, is one thing, but to single out finish as the red flag is, in my opinion, mis-leading. It plants the seed that excellent finishes are to be wary of. I'm not totally convinced yet that Gailen's badge is a FAKE. Only weights and measurements can get us closer to a correct determination.....I, for one would like to know what they are. We all also know that hardware isn't the ultimate determining factor either.....just look at S&L attributed badges for example.

I agree, so far in this thread there is no real hard evidence, and weights and measurements would be nice to see.
But keep in mind, as well as the finish, the catch plate is unusual. I can understand why there are doubts.

I disagree with your comment about pristine finishes though. IMO in this day and age when we know refinishing is common place we should be extra careful.
To be comfortable with a pristine finished badge it should compare to known originals as do the badges in the thread you highlighted. Often a particular maker uses a particular finish (check out the B&NL PAB in the thread you highlighted)
I have not seen enough of these 7 Wheelers to know if the finish on the badge in question, is what you would expect to see.

I have been looking for a silver first pattern seven wheeler for years in good condition and trust me most of the time this variant has very little of the silver wash left! I know some nice examples exist but not with the heavy frosted silver finish this badge has. In combination with the catchplate I would be very wary of adding this PAB to my collection.
