but I see no reason to destroy a perfectly good Wurster zincer "in the name of science" when there are heaps of badges that lost their hardware as well as a corroded ground dug pieces.

    @Darrell,

why not comment on GCA your self?
    Totally agree.

      Hans,
Please, it won't matter if we would use for this test a badge without the hardware on it or etc. because it always will be someone who would feel offended by this. These days you can't kill a fly without upsetting someone...besides over the years together with Chet we have contributed more to the collecting world than most of these blood thirsty "jokers" (who are demanding today our heads on the silver plate) will ever do...give me a break Hans...

        Robert,
where are your pics in those contributions today?

Don´t throw away your fake WB´s! Get in touch with me.
I collect them for reference purposes for the benefit of the hobby (for the right "fake" price of course).

          Hans,
I want you to know that I have donated shields, medals, combat badges, insigna and EK's to others who I felt were deserving because of their intrest and partisipation on the forum. Most cases they were young collectors and yet others I knew did not have the means to purchase something nice. I have contributed money to this forum as well as the GDC. Belive it or not there is a post from a GDC member recommending that Robert or perhaps myself wear the badge next time it gets shot. Condoning violence? Lighten up everyone. This is just a freaking hobby!
          Please enjoy it.....

I agree with Chet. The holier than thou collectors can decide what to do with your own badges, that does not mean you decide what everyone else does with theirs.
            best wishes,

You are watching these every day when visiting GCA...or many related to collecting books!

                    A couple of reasons.

                    1. Since Tom is a well respected member (and Moderator) of both forums I asked him (here) to comment over on GCA himself. He did, and congratulations for sticking to his same opinions there as he did here.

I've read both parallel threads with amusement really. Up to this point I didn't have a say one way or the other, but found it rather strange that EVERYONE at GCA took great offense to the Test, that is until Tom stated his view. Likewise most reviews here were positive.

I'm quite sure most of the hostility over there had NOTHING to do with the test and results obtained, but, rather by WHO did them. Seems to be quite a few "falling" outs happening lately and if you are on the list, it doesn't matter what you do, the BnZ'ers will come to the attack.

                    2. Why didn't "I" post over there? Well, for one, I've been there, done that and don't really care to start again. I was curious over the reaction to Tom's post. So far, not much. Unlike someone unwilling to go with the "Status Quo".

Both forums are guilty of the "Lemmings" who spring to action to pat their Power Brokers on the back for whatever they say.

(ex. see John Henderson or whatever his real handle is)

However before receiving badge from Chet i was busy annihilating old fakes in some strange conditions (i guess some people were trying to make them look old) and they all survived multiple shots. I'm almost positive that any other badge will act in exactly the same way. Let me explain why. We can calculate bullet spin speed from this formula:

                          Muzzle velocity times 720
                          ------------------------- = RPM
                          Twist rate in inches

So from my Tikka bullet was spinning roughly at 216,000 RPM's...so imagine that bullets were drilling holes in this PAB with over 200,000 RPM's speed! In my opinion this is fast enough to go through badge before any molecules had any time to react...
                          HI Robert:

That is some interesting information. The bullet was acting as a drill---in fact actually spinning much faster and with greater velocity than any drill that I think is used by the public. I think the securing of the piece with a piece of scotch tape was a bit risky, but I know in field conditions sacrifices have to be made. Anyway, as a test group we would even have to have more than one of the exact same PAB to see how it reacts to the test I would think for such an experiment. Granted we can say all PABs by this maker in this condition will react the same way, but this is really theory and not science.

Anyway, I think we will not have agreement on the use of this subject here in this matter. Personally I have some pieces that I collect that I am sure less than 50 have survived (they never made to begin with) in good condition and I could simply not see the destruction of even one of the items for a test...maybe to save a life yes if such an odd condition miraculously arose. We only are the caretakers of these items.

I wish everybody happy collecting and to agree to respect each others views as I am sure there will be disagreement on this subject.

                          Best,

                          J

So now we destroy badges and call it science? i call it crazy.
I cant even afford a PAB and you guys destroys a nice example.

                            Makes me sad.

Ok guys, this thread generated some heated discussions today and it was almost like going back in time...we have +1100 views so far, so even if you don't agree with me and Chet, nobody can complain about lack of entertainment!

I also don't remember a day when people so viciously were calling me an "idiot" or when was the last time when someone was calling for placing me at the front of the firing squad!

Anyhow, i really enjoyed today's discussions (with most of you). It just shows me that collecting spirit is still strong and collectors are as passionate about these subjects as ever. Just please remember one, but very important thing - it is hobby. If you are not in this for fun, you better get out of collecting ASAP! Also, please remember to respect others even if you totally disagree with their views or opinions. Keep it civilized people!

Now it is time for me to get back to my quiet "retirement". I'm leaving you in good hands (i see that moderators crew is stronger than ever today), have fun and happy collecting!

ps. big thanks to Chet for having courage to make it all possible!
