Great work and explaination Tom!
I have always wondered about the head cut out did not realise they drilled/sawed the cut out on the hinge after it had been put in place. It makes all sense. It is easier to perform the cut out when you have a bigger piece to lock and hence get more stability for the machining procedure.
I was just going to post pictures of my panzer abzeichen when I realised you already posted these detailed shots of my badge!

I can't get a picture or scan of it, but with my loupe, you can see at the bottom of the slot, there is metal flashing left over from cutting the slot. This flashing is ON TOP OF the solder for the base of the hinge! It is peeled over on each side of the slot, and lays ON TOP OF the solder. There is NO WAY the hinge could have been soldered after that flashing was there. Hope that makes sense.

Hi guys,
I just picked up a nice early, nickel silver Juncker IAB. As most of these early hollow Juncker IABs & PABs, it has the typical "head cut", but the feature on this exact badge is unique enough to be "proof postive" of my theory that this was formed when the center piece of the hinge was trimmed out. A few scans from the top of the badge show that there were 3 mill cuts for the hinge, each with its own distinct groove and is designated by a small piece of standing material between each groove. The left groove is very deep, with the middle groove being a bit shallower and the right groove being even a bit more shallower, and making the cut look more like steps. This matches EXACTLY to the cut on the head!
Hope you guys are as convinced as I am with this additional piece of evidence, very clear IMO. What else could it be, if not the cut out for the hinge?
