Hi Guys,
I received this from a member on the estand yesterday.
On opening the package it was in and taking a 'two second' look and feel of it I immediately dismissed it out of hand as a fake.
Contacted the vendor who has no problems taking it back but also assured me that it was OK and I have previously purchased quality items from them. Well, seeing I believe that there is always someone smarter than you I decided to have a second look.
I received some photos and help from Steve Conroy and it appears that this particular badge is very close to the 'Fat Daisy' variant.
This is what I have deduced from checking further:
1. The hinge/pin/clasp assembly is though, totally different from other 'Fat Daisy' varients I have previously seen. The clasp plate is unevenly cut and looks a bit 'tacky' in the quality stakes.
2. I have weighed it on my electronic reloading scales and it comes out at just 11.91 grams. My tombak hollowback IAB comes in a 14.03 which is not much more until you realize that it is 15% heavier. The difference in weight is quite noticable though when you handle both badges.
3. I don't believe the material is zink as it is so thin. Could it be aluminium or some sort of cheap tin alloy. No bubbling to the finish is apparent.
4. None of the parts of the badge are magnetic.
5. Under 10x magnification you can see traces of old finish and to top it three fractures running with folds in the metal which is very, very thin. Oddly enough, the fractures do not detract from the overall appearance and can only really be seen from the rear. These fractures are found on:
a) South West part of swastica.
b) Top of the rifle just below the Southern point of the swastika.
c) Under the rifle just below the bayonet including part of the sling.
If anyone has any comments on this item then please let me know.
Thanking in advance.
Regards ...
