Thanks for posting your badge Andrew. I keep coming back to this thread for a number of reasons. Firstly, while well intentioned I believe it led to some faulty or incomplete conclusions. Secondly, it led to several members whom I thought of as friends to leave the forum. So in this respect this thread is my nemisis.
Since I no longer collect these but am still interested in the truth I would like to point out somethings that I still cannot explain. Hopefully others will pick up the torch and pursue this to a conclusion.
If you go back thru the thread you will find the Typ 1 refered to as the one guarenteed original. This is based up obverse charactoristics and marking on the pin/catch. What I've noticed is that other charactoristics on the reverse provide even more clues to linking badges together. Andrews badge is one of those. I will post a pic of what I am refering to momentarily. I encourage those interested into going back thru the thread and examine the reverse details and compare the typ 1s to the rest. You will note inconsistancies even amonst like badges in the crimping of the rivits, pin/catch marks, and the flaw I will highlight next. Pins, catches and rivits are all hand done and so variation is expected. But what about this flaw?Attached Filespseudo-expert

My last thoughts for you are this: go back through and compare the number of type 1s vs the others that have this flaw, some do, some don't. Is it a die flaw or something that occured during production?
Many have speculated on the number of dies that GB would have had. If you had two wreath, and two tank dies it would be possible for 4 variations.
Just a thought to stir up interest in these badges.

Don,
I just give on on the whole issue. Vet bringbacks are now considered fake and no one can seem to agree on anything, other than the finely pebbled acorn caps being original. I just keep mine and am happy with them. When, in my old age, the time comes to sell, I am sure I will be in a world of caca and a lifetime (mine) guarantee won't be that long! I imagine someone ranting over a badge or medal while I sit, drooling, in a wheelchair at Crumbling Pines Rest Home. LOL!

In all seriousness, keep in mind that a badge purchased from a vet in 1970 which now makes it almost 40 years ago, was still 25 years after the end of the war.
Don raises a good point, however being that these badges were cast rather than forged I would say that the divet is not a die flaw at all, but rather something like crud in the die. Who knows though. There will always be some badges that reside in a grey area. best wishes,
