It is pretty common to find the Grade 1-4 badges/shields on these lanyards to be dark. I can only assume that to meet the demand for the large number of lanyards in these lower grades, various metals were used to include zinc alloys which tend to darken over the years. I have examples of where the shells have also darkened but do not remember this happening to the acorns. It is common for the shells of the higher grades to drop their gilt.

i would like to add that tim has been a great help to me over the past few weeks in the field of lanyards. ( be great when his book comes out ) this thread again a great help to me who just started on lanyards and got 8 now. to me these can be very nice items when put together in a group and when one can get the set im sure awsum to look at. i do not know many others that collect these except uniform guys so for me as a badge and medal guy its totally a new field of which on the forum not alot has been done on them. its good to see a thread that goes into the traps etc on these and the fake lanyard set ups. tim found one on mine but hopefully can be rectified at low cost.
i would like if other members have sets to show or start a new thread on collections forum for lanyards as would be great to see
