All great, your research paid off! I also incuded a mint "bronze" die cast Assmann GAB in my book, apparently made that way. It is a more greyish, olive bronze, not a golden bronze. I guess at one time Assmann thought it was "fashionable" to make them look that way.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments,it's certainly very encouraging

If you're a novice like myself,it really does pay to research before you blindly buy the first piece you see.It definitely saves heartsink

Frank,i've recently enquired about your present book and your future book...They're at the top of my "must" have's...and you're right, the Assman is more of a greyish olive bronze. Is this finish attributed to this maker only?

I've just noticed, under closer inspection you can see the negative print of the maker stamp on the swastika...

interesting to see that coming through the badge!

Yes, I found that to be true. Strangely enough some of the numbered die cast Assmann GABs are finished in a silver finish, while others bear this olive-grey finish. I have seen several absolutely mint badges from both these catagories, so no chance of an aging process. It seems it was Assmann's late war way to produce a more shiny badge and a more subdued one.

On the other "bronze" GABs I have handled, this effect seemed to be more the cause of an aging/discoloring process. Some people claim that this is not the case with their badges but that is my experience. One of the unknown makers is especially prone to this kind of discoloration into a very dark brownish tone.
                    Cheers, Frank

Thanks for the info Frank...very helpful...
I have a theory for the front stamp. If the surface on which the badge is located for stamping (probably a jig/fixture of some sort) has been "dry stamped" i.e no badge has been placed there, then every time you place a badge on the same spot and stamp it,the impact/pressure will cause a negative shadow on the front.
I saw another BSW with this effect on the forum a couple of months ago. Also, i have a "26" stamped EKI pin with the same effect again.

                        Hi Paul

                        All great badges.

Really nice "feature" on that BSW. I have seen it before on this forum and I think there was another possible explanation. It looks like the obverse mold must have had that indentation but how that came about ??

                        regards
                        Graeme
