this thread is a perfect example of why I recently joined the association and spend more time at this forum. You guys were vetting some expensive badges and everyone kept their cool throughout. I'm impressed (especially with Frank) with the amount of detail and materials you were able to compare/share with each other.

I also have a newbie question. On these "high end" badges, doesn't it stand to reason that the "fakers" will use very, very close copies of the originals that may be EXACT copies with the only difference being the metallurgical content.

I am a biomedical scientist, so this is not my field, but has anyone ever tried mass spectrometry or NMR on samples from these badges to glean a "signature" consistent with certain manufacturers? I realize this is a Herculean task and would only be cost effective on the really $$$ badges, but samples could be sent to a private company to do the testing.

You are absolutely right, it could be done but up to now we still are able to find out by sometimes tiny mistakes why a badge is a fake. Or so we think...

But honestly, the perfect fake has not been made yet. There is always something. When you will only be able to tell a fake from a good one by spectrometry, this will be the time to stop collecting.

So how does this thread end up? Is Anthony's example 1 a correct badge? What about the Francois example? Anthony's looks a lot like one I got photos of and now I'm confused...
