That nickname is not really applicable for this variation although people still use the term to identify as the maker is still unknown.
Just do a search on the half moon gab and it will become clear.
Lovely badge that started this thread. Great detail and in very good condition.

Nice half-moon GAB pick up! Lovely finish on yours and as the others have said, it is the lesser-common hardware setup variant. The one Steve shows from the WAF Database is the more common hinge, hence its common name half-moon.
Surprising that we still don't know exactly who the maker is behind this nice-looking GAB.
The half-moons hinge plates have slight hardware variation too. The one that Steve shows has a tall hinge. Here is other one with a shorter, fatter block hinge.
