      Hi,
The measures of the PAB are 60 mm x 42 mm. Weight 17 +/-. I'm sorry but I do not have one balance for this precise weight.
      Thanks.

        Hi Guys,

Well just what I expected to see a very early angled cut hinge with very small base.

Here is a better picture of such a hinge.

The same type of hinge transformed in to an anti-rotation device on my screwback Porsche

            And most important of all!

I never discussed this on the forum but some of these early Porsche PAB's and IAB's show a unique feature not to be found on any other combat badges.

In fact it's an incision in the eagles head that perfectly accomodates the pin when open. When I first noticed this many years ago I just tought it was the result of the pin being puched to hard in the wreth when openened. However after seeing many more of these badges it became clear that this incision was made on purpose and on well preserved badges you can clearly see the file marks in the cut-away.

It's absolutely beyond me what the purpose of this incision could have been but it's a facinating feature.

On the discussed badge even with a lot of the material grinded away the incision is still clearly visible.

                And on an IAB,

Have fun looking for this on your early nickel silver Porsche IAB & PAB's

PS: the catch on the discussed badge clearly is a replacement, to judge the pin the pics are still not good enough. A profile shot with closed pin might help.

is the anti rotation device (hinge) squished down..the hinge in discussed is round with pin attatchment your s appears flat....

I think my main concern was the illusion of the black coloring and how it contrast and distorted with the picture of orginal discussed badge and it genral appearence...
Is the nickle silver still able to get the polished original look or is this again the picture or no the effect of the way it was stored/dug...
as you can see I'm still on the limb-I guess for me just don't go for ground dug...
I like when badges like this come up, its a learning experience, I bet Militariitalia is just confused with us with only 4 posts

                    Hi Jeff,

At first I also thought that the anti- rotation device was a custom made thing. At that moment I was not yet aware of the existance of these heavy angled cut hinges. After stumbling over more badges with this type of hinge I took a closer look at the screwback it became clear that this construction indeed is nothing more then a squished original hinge with filled off edges.

IMO you will always be able to give nickel silver back its original appearance but depending on how deep the "corrosion" entered the surface you will loose material. IMO this is what happened to the badge that started this thread.

If the badge that started this thread is nickle-silver then why does it have so much verdigris (green patina)? I wouldn't think you would copper coat it unless you were going to apply a finish, like bronze perhaps.....

Good Point Don. The more I look at it the more I wonder if maybe this badge once had a (bronze?) finish. Impossible to tell without holding it I'm afraid.

It would be a shame if someone scrubbed off the bronze finish thinking it was dirt and corrosion.

                              Hi Philippe and all,

Philippe, very good eye on that cut out feature at the eagle's head for the pin. Very interesting.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                                Hi Tom,

It indeed is interesting first of all because it's there and secondly because it's unique to this maker.

Question however remains what coud have been its purpose if it ever had one. Maybe this is production related damage. I really have no idea
