What do the bottom markings look like....if any. I'd certianly expect any vintage mug to have some markings on the base.....

I'm afraid I tend to agree with Luftschutz, these style mugs are still mass produced in Germany (and could be made anywhere...of course) and it would be extremely easy to slap a decal on and glaze it.....The quality of this transfer is NO WHERE NEAR as good as a vintage RLB helmet decal which tells me it's probably a repro.

I have seen "this" particular RLB Mug before, but didn't give it much attention as is was with some of those ultra rare mugs with Iron Crosses, U-Boat badges, SS Dress uniform Skull bars, etc. emboissed on them...all strictly decorators (actually all junk) in my opinion.

There's no example of this in the "Steins of the 3rd Reich" book (don't have it in front of me so can't give name or author) but it has a great many Mugs which are unquestionably original....

However, we all have items we believe in regardless of other's opinions....
    nature of the beast.....

This one does have decorative "conversation" value, at least.

Cool - there's a "Steins of the 3rd Reich" book? When did that come out?

The booklet is titled "GERMAN MILITARY STEINS 1914-1945" by Gary Kirsner ISBN: 0-9614130-2-6. Shows 269 Steins, 39 WW1; 38 Freikorps & Weimar; and 192 3rd Reich period (not counting 10 or so repro.s)....excellent little referance.....I'm sure long out of print.

I do not think I am looking at a decal and it appears to be paint to me. Also I do not see the tell-tale handle of a repro. But not a stein expert and do not watch them as much as other items.

heres the mark on the bottom, not dieing to defend the piece, but as I said, I see all the fakes and tourist crap on the market, I have never seen one of these. anyway, it makes a nice beer mug.

umm,,with this or any other krug or what have you, why would the artwork on a beer mug come close to the real article-

that is almost like saying the FJ badge artwork here is inferior to the real badge.

Iam just trying to understand the logic of that with any piece a motiff is reproduced on.

As I have said before, I believe this stein to be an original. The front looks to be painted by hand and then fire glazed. Now that I have seen the markings on the bottom I am even more certain that this is a correct and period piece.
