I don't think it is a 57er version either. Why would they change the design? The only thing that changed for the 57ers was the eagle/swaz was deleted which wouldn't apply here.....

That's a good point Don & obviously, as you say, the whole purpose of the '57 awards was to remove the Swaz.
The only other reason would be if the original Die's were lost & they made new ones & for the few that were needed maybe it was easier/cheaper to make die's without the "rope" effect & with a flat back?
That's the only reason that comes to mind that could explain it.
As i said before i have only heard this on the Forum, not in any recognised publication.

Jamie Cross had a 1st and 2nd Class '57 Ostvolk badges for sale today. They both had the ropes as well.

I just can't see this being a maker's variant. The ropes are an integral part of the design.

Don, it's not part of the design on the version shown in post 9, which is ring marked "100". That style of number marking is commonly thought to be original - again, no rope.

              Who's to say? s/f Robert

Let's follow the maker mark then for the 2d class. Here is a maker mark for an EK2.

Sounds reasonable, Don. The posting in number 9 has a similiar or identical 100 stamp style, so far as I can tell. s/f Robert

But the one in post 9 does not have the rope. Manufacturers used lots of manufacturing style and marking variations - why not these?

I'm not hard over on this being original, but we could all post our variations of our badges, from various sources - who got these directly or indirectly from vets?

Period pictures either way? Wartime catalogs or sample boards? If we're going to give it a scrub, let's try to see what actual evidence exists out there?

I owned many of these awards, and didn't realized I had actually owned one of these medals with-out the ropes.

I sold the one in the photo and several others to Weitze at a SOS a few years ago. Don't remember if it was ring marked or not.

Interesting quirk! If it were a rattle snake it would have bit me!

                            Cheers,

Here's a photo of a first class case top.

The design does not have the ropes, just lines.

Could the no-rope example just be a varient?
