Any idea who made this or where it came from?

Thanks for the additional pics. At best I think it is a refinished bronze badge. The front finish is in way better condition than the back. Second is the crimping method. It looks like is was done more than once, ie the backing plate has been recrimped IMO. I'm not sure if that maker used that type of crimping though and I don't like the hinge at all. Just a few observations. To get a good cross section of answers it should be in the badge forum. I'll ask a MOD to move it.

For me that badge is a reproduction. The crimping should be raised not indented. The hinge block should be rounded on top and not square which is found on fakes, The catch has been soldered rather than crimped in. All bad. I think it is cast from a genuine clasp with the hardware badly applid after.

I have no idea....
But is not a cast of an original. I have held it up to known originals and it is identical (detail and lack of pits, etc) It is very crisp... The stuff on the back is what is strange, definitely shoddy for gold. Could it be a late war rush? Finished after the war? Finished by slave labor? Finished in the dark while bombs were bursting everywhere?
The detail on the front matches any known good that I have seen so I would say the badge is original but the back looks strange...again, was it built in the last days when they had to make due? Who knows what was going on during the war...
My point being, someone went through a lot of trouble to make a very nice high quality badge... and then to make several obvious mistakes that could have easily been prevented... maybe this is a late, late war... then again....
I personally purchased this in 1986...and have been questioning it ever since...
I do appreciate the opinions and information!Last edited by stropp; 12-04-2005, 10:42 PM.

This clasp is not original in my opinion. Looks like one of the British-made restrikes from the 70's/80's. Actually a die-stuck piece, but very sloppy workmanship. Falls way short of an original Third Reich Period assembly. Base metal does not look correct. Pin, hinge block, catch, and center punch crimping are not correct, and way too sloppy.
