    spanisch war question

    Hello,

We see quite a lot of those so called Spanisch War wound badges all over the place but is there anyone who can provide more info on the following subject :

iff a German Soldier was wounded in Spain during the Civil war => did he receive also the so called " Spanisch Wound medal 1936 - 1939 " ? from the Spanisch Governement + iff yes then he must have the ribbon for this medal also on his ribbon bar, etc ......

The this soldier would have received 2 actual badges for one and the same wound => namely the Spanisch wound medal + the German wound badge !!!!!!!

statistics for the Spanisch civil war :

    * Black wound badge : 182 times awarded
    * Silver wound badge : once awarded

Keeping these numbers in mind and the possible fact that a wounded German also received the Spanisch wound medal that would make such ribbon bars quite rare

Is there anyone who can provide documented proof for this ?

Have a look at the Legion Condor section on Helmut Weitze's site (or was that what prompted your question?).

Even then, there is no evidence that the owner of this bar received the German wound badge. I suppose if you knew that the award criteria for the Spanish medal and German badge didn't differ too radically you could assume that he did.

      spot on

      Hello,

Yeps that bar is the one that inspired me and it is a very interesting piece but without award doc. evidence my theory will just be a guess ( nothing more or less )

Can you post the award criteria for the Spanisch wound medal ?

No Spanish Wound medal was awarded to German members of the Legion Condor, but it was created with a variant a special design to reward foreigners fighting with the Spanish troops, not alongside them. The correct name for the medal is "Medalla de Sufrimientos por la Patria" trnaslated as "Medal for sufering for the Country" and could be awarded not only for being wounded in first line, also for wounds and illness in the rear or for spending time as P.O.W. or to civilians adicted to the Nacionalist who stay in the Red Zone as was called the part of Spain under the Republican control. If more needed let me know.

Regarding this point, acording to the spanish sources I have search no order for the Spanish Government allowed the award of this medal to the German memebers of the Legion Condor, so no posible of oficial award, but due that all awards were rendered after the ceasefire perhaps some local commander award it due the non existing regulations. Do you have some 9info or pics from a known award to a German? post it and I can try to decypher what happen.

              Mr. David:

I think new information has come to light that answers your questions. See the new thread about the Spanish Medal for Suffering.
