            Hi Piotr,

Yes, this is an S&L badge and a wartime example in my opinion. The rivets and catch are obviously replaced, but as far as I can see it is a wartime example. I especially like the "dimple" on the pin, which is a good sign for wartime-made S&L badges IMO.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Agree, but why are the details so weak? Extreme wear, or is this piece from a burial?

Wear and problem with making a sharp photos.
I don't see any corrosion etc. - without any doubt this is not ground dug item.

Hi, it does't look like ground dug , I think active wear during combat this is also confirmed by repairing.

                      Hi guys,

I also think this one is a worn example, judging by the particular wear on the hinge and on the highpoints of the badge (something you really don't see from just changing hands at dealer shows IMO). Also the inscribed initials on the reverse and repaired nature points to combat wear rather than just broken at a show and fixed by a collector IMO.

The weak eagle detail is somewhat typical of later war S&L Paras in my opinion, but what is critical to me is that there is no raised wing flaw on the leading edge of the wing. This flaw is well developed on S&L's 1957er badges and is clear they used the same die for their postwar production, so when you find an eagle like this that has no flaws on the wing, it represents the earliest S&L production timeframe. With S&L, its hard to pinpoint the "earliest", and if this badge is postwar-produced then it means that S&L didn't produce any para badges during the war. Based on ground dug examples, direct from vet finds, etc., we know that S&L very likely did produce paras during the war and this is one of them based on the forensics I see on this example.

This is a "Cupal Eagle" S&L badge and they are still an unknown quantity at this point.

I don't know of any example that has been found directly from a vets hand, or ground dug or even on the souvenier boards that S&L put together right after the war. So that is the negative side.

The positive side is that the eagle is the "Type A", with very little, or no flaws in the on the wing so I believe it is from the early S&L eagle die. The reverse hardware of your example also looks wartime compatable, as well as the finish on the wreath.

So I tend to think these are "possibly wartime" or early postwar period.
