Heeres Pz. Jg. Abt. 743. Short history.
The abteilung was organized in November 3, 1943, by the staff of the 9th Army, from the 1st and 3rd Company of the 36 Panzerjäger abteilung, and the remains of the 321 Panzerjäger abteilung. It was subordinate to the XXXXI. Panzerkorps as army troops and was destroyed in June 1944 near Bobruisk.
It was reorganized set up in East Prussia with Hetzers. At the end of the war, she stood in West Prussia.

Regiment assigned to 5.Pz.Div. Mobilized on 26 Aug 39 with two Abt. each with two light and one med Kp. 5.Kp. Remanined on Crete and was renamed 1.Pz.Abt.212. New 5.Kp. formed on 10 Jul 41. Regiment expanded to eight Kp. on 1 Aug 41. I.Abt. converted to Panther Abt. with four Kp. on 5 May 43. The 5. Panzer-Division was formed in November 1938 in Oppeln. It fought in Poland and France before supplying Panzer Regiment 15 to the forming 11. Panzer-Division. It took part in the campaign in the Balkans before transferring to the Eastern front where it fought on the central sector. It took part in the drive against Moscow and later fought at Kursk before being pushed back into Latvia, Kurland and finally East Prussia where it surrendered to the Red Army in April 1945 near Danzig.
Following the Balkan campaign the 5. Kompanie of Panzer-Regiment 31 with 5 Panzer II and 17 Panzer III was detached from the division to be used in the invasion of Crete where it was used to form Panzer-Abteilung Kreta. Two Panzer II from this kompanie were transfered to Crete by a small harbor tug under the command of Oberleutnant-zur-See Albert Oesterlin following urgent requests from the airborne troops fighting on the island.

Pz. Art. Rgt. Kurmark. The Panzer Artillery Regiment Kurmark was organized on 26 January 1945 in Guben, in Wehrkreis III.
The regiment was organized from the Grossdeutschland artillery replacement and training abt. The 1st Battalion was set up with
two heavy and one light field howitzer battery. The Second battalion was made up of three Sturmgeschütz batteries. I believe the
SS Artillery Instructional Regiment was used to organize the III battalion. The regiment was based in Küstrin, Wehrkreis III. The
regiment is also known as Panzer Artillery Regiment 151. At the end of the war the regiment consisted of a single battalion with
three field howitzer batteries.</pre>

3. Pz. Jag. Abtlg. 288. This one stumped me but I believe it was part of Sonderverband 288. Any help would be appreciated on this one.</pre>

I think the first tag is most likely original. The rest are fakes. The fonts are all wrong.

I figured that was coming so I'm going to try to match the fonts with EKM that have been blessed as original and fakes. Of course you could post all known original fonts used and save me some time. Jim

Hi Lee,

I'm not exactly sure what your getting at. Fonts are described as text characters in a specific style and size. I just did a brief comparison of some of the letters and numbers on my EKM vs some that you've either blessed or owned. Yes I went through all 1400 of your posts in order to download examples to use. Fortunately most of your posts were on Identity documents. You own some awesome examples by the way.

Even within your examples there are lots of variations among the letters and numbers.The sample size of your blessed EKMs was very small. None of my examples are outside the norm IMHO. If the base tags are bad, the way the units are designated then that's another thing.

So which fonts are accepted as real? They used so many different stamp sets during the war how can that be used as the sole discriminator.

ISO sets made after the war are supposed to be easy to spot, but from what I've seen its not necessarily due to the fonts. Many times its because of the discs used or the way its stamped.

I haven't even tried to compare the other examples that were blessed by the forum members. If I do carry the comparisons further I would probably omit SS tags, because of the lack of consensus on so many of them.

Anyway here are the few comparisons I was able to make. My examples are at the bottom on the same line. Regards Jim

Here were two EKMs pointed out as fakes because they are ISO standard produced after the war. Some of the fonts look wartime IMHO. There are definitely bigger issues then the fonts with these. I don't think these look like any of the ones I posted. jim

The first one is ok, second I don't like at all and number 3-5 are so called "Rokas" fakes for sure. Search the forum for "Rokas" and you'll find plenty of more like these. They have typical Rokas typaface. Furthermore, having three with the same typaface from different units should make the bells ring even if the typeface was different from Rokas. Huge numbers of these were made in St.Petersburg, Russia in the late 1990's and later in Canada when Rokas moved there.

I appreciate the comments and my next step is to compare these to the Rokas ones. I have downloaded all the Rokas examples to use from the forum. In my opinion a single number using a Rokas typeface wouldn't make the tag bad. If the majority of the letters used are in Rokas typeface I would agree. Anyway I'll do a letter by letter comparison. The rokas tags have a look to them that are fairly distinctive. The fast majority of the Rokas ones are SS. There were two only GD ones and one HG that was also attributed to Rokas on the forum. If you have other army ones please show them. Another thing I noticed was that most of the Rokas fakes weren't well worn. Anyway I hope to have my comparison done by the end of the week.

You are correct about the three tags using the same typeface and that concerns me. Since the WAF is a learning resource theres still value in studying them more closely. They didn't cost much and I can return them without any problems. Thanks Jim

The stamps used on the tag 2 looks completely post war style.

The others after that one, for me, the 3 is a common font on fake tags.
