THIS IS THE HISTORY OF THE BATTLE OF TILLY LA CAMPAGNE -LA HOGUE

The town of Tilly-la-Campagne is located on a small landslide from a height of 76 meters which allows for views of the area. It is defended by the elements 1. SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler". According to plan the Spring operation , launched on 25 July 1944, is the North Nova Scotia Highlanders (9th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division ) who is responsible to seize.

The assault was preceded by a massive air bombardment. Canadians begin the progression from 3:30 am in the glow of light beams that are directed toward the clouds to create a reverb effect. However, this system is double-edged in that it also allowed the Germans to see their opponents. The North Nova Scotia Highlanders progressing on two time: the B and D companies in the east and Company C in the west. The latter penetrates northwest village without major problems despite the defense. The other two companies encounter more obstacles and unit commander of Company D, Major Matson was killed, as his replacement a few minutes later, Captain Nicholson. Major Wilson, commander of B Company, was wounded during the fighting. Communication problems are frequent, Canadians set up a signal system to stay informed of developments and 4:30, a flare is taken: it is a sign of the success of the mission: Tilly-la-Campagne is under control. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Petch, commander of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, is relieved.

But this satisfaction does not last: Petch quickly realizes that the entire village is not under control and that the Germans, taking the southern half of the village, infiltrate everywhere. Moreover, they are reinforced at dawn by armored units which cause heavy losses in the opposing camp. Throughout the day of 25 July, fighting continues relentlessly until melee in the streets and in homes. Lieutenant Colonel Petch appealed to Company A and C Squadron of the Fort Garry Horse in favor of C Company west of Tilly-la-Campagne but Canadian armored can not face the tanks Panther in 1. SS Panzer Division who pass the assault eleven tanks were destroyed in minutes and C Squadron folds to Bourguébus . Since a favorable position and during the afternoon, they support the best they can the soldiers of C Company who dig fighting holes and bury themselves for protection from gunfire and constant bombing.

Increasingly isolated and outnumbered, Petch ordered his men to retreat to the cover of darkness and regain their original starting point. Communications over evil, all Canadians are not getting the information and survivors of Company A, number 9, not fold until early morning of 26 July. The Germans of the 1. SS Panzer Division taking advantage of the darkness of the night to strengthen their presence in Tilly-la-Campagne. Small groups of Canadians remain fixed in the ruins of the village, isolated and prey to certain death.

On 26 July, despite the terrible losses, the North Nova Scotia Highlanders ordered to restart its offensive to take the village, supported by the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders and tanks of C Squadron of the Fort Gary Horse. The general commanding the 9th Infantry Brigade, Brigadier Cunningham, protests against this order with the General Keller Commander of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Finally, no attack is launched, because the chances of success are slim. From 24 to 26 July, the North Nova Scotia Highlanders record loss of 58 soldiers. The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders 4 killed while the Fort Gary Horse has 13. The front does not move in the next few days, but the soldiers still dying, hit by gunfire. The Operation Spring is a failure and Canadians have paid the price.

Canadians reorganize their device with the arrival on the front of the 4th Armored Division commanded by Major General C. Foulkes. They renewed the attack of Tilly-la-Campagne on the night of July 30 to 31 with the engagement of the Calgary Highlanders (5th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division ) supported by the Essex Scottish Regiment (5th Infantry Brigade). The offensive was preceded by one in the morning on July 31 by a diversionary attack by B Company of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment (10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Armoured Division) towards Bourguébus. But the diversion is quickly stopped by German mortars. At 2:30, the Calgary Highlanders (4th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division) rushes toward Tilly behind an artillery barrage. Despite heavy losses, Canadians are able to engage in the town and violent fighting continued the rest of the night. However, they do not stay long and fold while a company of the Royal Regiment of Canada (4th Infantry Brigade) is sent as reinforcements She turned back when she meets survivors of the Calgary Highlanders that fold.

At 2:30 p.m., a new offensive is launched, without success. The Allies then ordered the massive shelling and permanent village of Tilly-la-Campagne, both by artillery as by aviation. The ruins are bombed to no longer look at a pile of ashes. Regularly, Canadian patrols venturing outside the village to test the opposing device: these actions prove particularly deadly because all against all odds, the SS stand firm despite the intensity of the shelling and opened fire on the patrol. Gradually, the Germans are reinforced by the arrival of a new division on the Normandy front, 89. Infantry Division , which replaced the exhausted men of the 1. Panzer-Division: to Tilly-la-Campagne, the Grenadier Regiment in 1055 taking position. The SS Leibstandarte feel they have just suffered the biggest bombing since the beginning of the war.

Meanwhile, the Allies develop a new offensive to shake up the German defenses south of Caen: this is the Totalize , which begins on the evening of August 7, 1944 by violent bombing . This time, in the early hours of August 8, the 2nd Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders (152nd Infantry Brigade, 51st Infantry Division ) that goes up to the assault, but the elements of 89. Infantry Division rejected the first attack of the day. The 5th Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders (152nd Infantry Brigade) takes over. At 7 am, it was the turn of tanks of B Squadron of the 148th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps to intervene: the Grenadier Regiment 1055 folds, Tilly-la-Campagne definitely falls into Allied hands at the end of morning, but at what price!

No fewer than ten regiments of infantry and cavalry allies, dozens of support and support as well as air force units were hired to take over this small Normandy village reduced to the state of ashes at the beginning August 1944. the Allied losses amounted to several hundred soldiers killed, wounded and missing.

              thank you naxos

Bourguébus - Hogue was freed ' on July 20th, 1944 by elements of the 7th armored division and the 5th r.t.r. from the brigade Hinde. But the battle of tanks of Bouguebus - Tilly ended only on August 8th. 19 days of fights during which German pulled a multitude of shells at the center of Bourguébus destroyed is 95 % .il had no more archives of city hall, or notarial archives there.

                He appears to be:

                FP Nr. 13721

                Stab II u. 5.-8. Kompanie Grenadier-Regiment 1055

Interesting, he is not in the Vermisstenbildliste or on the Volksbund site so he was perhaps taken prisoner of war?

                  Hello

exactly ian its possible to taken prisoner of war by the Canadians, or Scottish

"Rising behind the 154th Brigade, the 152nd Highland Infantry Brigade (Robert Cassels) must clean the terraint between Hubert-Folie and Tilly-la-Campagne. The 2nd Bn Seaforth Highlanders of Lt. Andrews supported by the Vickers machine guns mounted to the 1/7th Bn Middlesex attempt to seize Tilly-la-campagne held only by 130 men of the 89. ID. But the German machine guns prevented the Scots to fulfil their mission during the night. Should be what Andrews called the 5th Bn Seaforth of Lt. Walford as reinforcements, supported by a Squadron of the 148th car. It takes nearly seven hours to the Scots to seize the small locality with a numerical superiority of almost 1 to 10!"

You are welcome. For a company, a casualty can also be a "Vermisst" or a 'Gefangene". Not only a "Gefallene" or "Verwundete".
