Thank you all for the assistance. I have never purchased an officer SS Soldbuch before, and didn't want to overpay. I have other items that belong to this officer, which is why I want the piece. When and if I can secure the grouping, I'll show you what all I have.

Thanks for posting the scans. A nice Soldbuch. I do not collect SS Soldbuchs, but as you probably know a decent one to an officer takes time to turn up. From the awards he saw service early in the Russian campaign and qualified for the first two awards. Interestingly he did not return to the LAH after receiving just one wounding for the black wound badge, but must have been assigned to other administrative duties before Italy. So no further front service? Also, the photo of the recepient is one of the smallest I have seen in a Soldbuch. Imo, what is also interesting are the Verona XX stampings...a most odd one I have not seen before.
Hello Doug,
Yes, you are correct. It is the KvKI. Interestingly he was not awarded the KvKII.

Thanks. Well, I'll be...you are correct! Must be me tired old eyes...I did not enlarge the scan for easier reading. Okay, so much for my reading it as a VwA. Had a look at it again and sure enough it is an entry for the KvK. You are also correct again as it appears the the entry does not state it was a second class award, but I believe that such administrative mistakes are found in Soldbuchs from time-to-time.
Hmmm...he was not wounded. So why was he pulled from the LAH so early?

Originally posted by Craig GottliebInteresting guy, really. He became a senior judge in Italy after leaving the LAH. Thanks again for all of your contributions - I look forward to watching you guys further analyze this piece. If I get more information or scans, I will post them for your enjoyment.
Looking over the Soldbuch I noticed a few more things. The photo appears to have been cut in half, and had previous staple holes. Although by no means a red flag it appears it may have possibly been taken from another passbook and then put into the Soldbuch. Are there any other leave pages? The scan provided shows an odd case of one leave entry having been stamped twice. Are the medical pages in the Soldbuch present? This may be a possible reason why he did not return to the LAH. If you have access to further documents on him it could very well take care of alot of the guess work.

Craig~
I know you already know this, but for those who don't, the Soldbuch belonged to the following officer (data from John Moore's Fuehrerliste der Waffen-SS CD-Rom:
Knote, Heinrich
SS-Obersturmbannführer der Waffen-SS
Born: 18.07.1910 in Pöcking.
Died: 04.11.1998.
SS-Nr.: 16 365
[as of 04.1941] Assigned as SS-Stubaf. and III (Gerichtsoffizier) of the Leibstandarte SS "Adolf Hitler"
[as of 06.1944] Assigned as III (Gerichtsoffizier) of II.SS-Panzer-Korps.
If he went on to serve under Karl Wolff as a senior judge in Italy, it is likely his promotion to Standartenführer, though recommended by Wolff, was not finalized/formalized; there were numerous such cases of Wolff staff members recommended for promotion mit Wirkung vom (with effect from) 20.04.1945 that did not reach the SS-Personalhauptamt in Berlin quickly enough to be formally approved.
Best wishes,
