Next up, Hugo Ickenstein of U-1195

      http://uboat.net/boats/u1195.htm

Note that the cover was crossed out in red for someone that had died, but was then rubbed out, there is no Hugo Ickenstein in the volksbund database and U-boat.net records 32 dead and 18 survivors, it seems that he was one of the fortunate ones.

          He also served on U-763

From the dates on this page and thos on U-boat.net, he clearly followed his captain, Ernst Cordes first to U-763, then on to U-1195

Looks like he got his U-boat badge after the U-382's 4th war patrol and his EKII after the 6th

And now, a couple of funnies.

How the hell he was allowed to get away with this photo i don't know, but when i saw it i couldn't help thinking of Obergefreiter by the grace of god, Josef Porta (for those familiar with Sven Hassel)

This guy was clearly auditioning as Adolf's double

Ok, time for a couple of really interesting ones.

Reinhardt Klug, a lowly Gefreiter in a flak abteilung...but he had a history.

until aug. 1941 he was an FJ spending a year with 6./FJR 1..then something happened and he turns up again in may 42 going from one slightly less glamorous LW unit to another.

Qualified for his FJ badge in Oct.40, looks like he was on to a winning career to, made unteroffizier jan 41...then got busted, but what had he done?

Nothing of his service prior to may '42 and he fell foul of the rules again in '44, though only a minor offence.

The only clue i can see is in his strafbuch summary for the major offence he committed in 1941, but i need some help with both the handwriting and the military penal codes.

Then there's a final intriguing twist. The note in his WP explaining his disappearance. In Jan.41 he was ordered to Oslo Fornebu airfield (perhaps for onwards journey to the continent) to report for duty with a fallschirmjäger sonderkommando,

The next one. Usually you see LW personnel being transferred to the SS, this one is the opposite.

joined the SS-pionier sturmbann VT in June 35

                                The rest of his awards.

There are quite a few books to these Condor crews as they were sent to the East at the end of the war to help in the evacuation of East Prussia.
