The Soldbuch is a cracker, it's just the photo that is causing problems.

If he is wearing a 15 year nsdap, so he would have joined quite young. Perhaps he was awarded a gpb for service to the party, not for membership under 100,000. I wonder also if his birthday is correct. Could he not have only joined the nsdap in 1937 when he was 18? It does not appear to me enough time to get the nsdap 15. Hj membership did count towards your time if you were in the "correct position" so that is a hypothesis as to how such a young ma. Wound up with gpb. Perhaps he was a high ranking hj as well.

I agree with jmark "The Soldbuch is a cracker" otherwise.
I also found Herbert Henkel on the German War Grave registry. His birth place is Brieg not Grieg.Attached FilesLast edited by naxos; 06-26-2012, 09:10 PM.

I knew it would only be a matter of time before this one re-surfaced.
About three years ago this Soldbuch was offered and sold via a militaria dealer who also specializes in fossils (can't remember his name). I discussed this book in detail with a few very experienced Soldbuch and Wehrpass collectors at the time it was listed on that site and we all agreed that the photo was replaced post war - mainly for the same reasons already posted by Naxos, Jason and Ian. Several other experienced ID collectors who I later discussed this book with further also felt that the photo was clearly replaced post-war.
In my opinion the photo in this Soldbuch is NOT original to the book, nor does it depict the soldier the Soldbuch was originally issued to. I believe the original photo was removed and this one was added post-war - perhaps glued in place over where the original once was once attached, or by using the same holes from the staples that once affixed the original photo - quite possibly with the original staples that may have been left in the holes from when the original photo was removed.

Regardless of the photo, I quite like the book. I wish this photo could be examined in hand. Photos are good but there is no trace of a previous photos.no glue, paper loss, nothing. I do not know how to explain it. I am not arguing that this picture is of our guy only to say I wish others could examine it in hand. Just the fact that this guy fought in panthers at kursk is cool to me.

Congratulations to this Killer Soldbuch - but please take that Party-Dude picture out, it depreciates the document.Last edited by naxos; 06-26-2012, 09:46 PM.

It's extremely easy to find portrait photos this size which fit nicely inside the front cover of a SB, lining up perfectly with the original signature. Replacing removed photos in Soldbücher is something that has been happening for many years.
