    Battle Damage to Soldbuch?

    I am buying this soldbuch grouping from a guy who lives in Leipzig Germany, that I know through forums, etc.

    I have not done any research on this particular grouping yet. Rudolf Keller was wounded in February, 1945 (and got the BWB). The seller has not yet sent me a picture of page 12-13. So, I am not sure what wound he sustained. This group also include 60 photos. Here it is from a while ago:

    I have a few questions though:

    I am wondering if you guys think the damage to the book was from him being wounded. I cant think of anything else that would have cause this kind of damage, but maybe you guys have some ideas? Someone on another forum suggested that it could possibly be rodent damage.

    And, do any of you know what some of the extra documents are? (other than the fuhrerschiens)

          I hope that it is shrapnel damage vs anything else.

          The reason I feel that it is shrapnel is because it went through the cover, all the pages, through a fuhrerschein, and out the back. That would be pretty hard for a mouse to chew through cleanly and uniformly.

            I feel that it is most likely storage damage. Things get slammed in drawers and etc all the time.

            It could have been caused by just about anything...

              I still don't understand how the rodent could have eaten through the two covers, all the pages, fuhrerschein, and out the back cover.

                    Here's a recently acquired Soldbuch from my collection that got hit by shrapnell and has blood stains of the original owner on all pages. Just for comparison, as the size and the location on the edge of the SB are comparable but the way the paper of your SB is damaged looks less like it is done by shrapnell.

                    As a side note, I feel that when the SB would have been seriously hit by shrapnell or bullets, a Zweitschrift would have been issued and the wound would not have been entered in the damaged Soldbuch. The same happened with the Soldbuch pictured below: no entries beyond a certain date in 1943, no Entlassung, no KIA... it's highly probable he just got wounded and received a new Soldbuch.

                        That is interesting, and I understand that blood theory. But I feel like there are a few exceptions to this. Here are a few soldbuchs that have damage and little or no blood:

                        It is frustrating to hear this news about the soldbuch. I was going to buy it mainly because of the battle damage. So, unless we decide otherwise about the damage, I will probably just email the guy I am buying it from and explain to him why I am not going to proceed through the transaction.

                        I didnt check with everyone before telling the man I would buy it because I was so sure that it was direct damage from the wound entered in his soldbuch. That will not happen again

                          Battle damage to soldbuch?

                          IMHO, the damage to your docs is either rodent or bug chews, not battle damage. I've owned a few books that had battle damage, and all of them had blood stains on the covers or pages, even from a very tiny piece of shrapnel. One of the owner's of my battle-damaged soldbuchs survived his wound, but no wound badge award was recorded in the book. It would add to the value of the soldbuch if it was battle damage, as some collectors really like books with shrapnel or bullet holes, but in this case, I think that the book was damaged while in storage. In any event, it's a nice soldbuch group!!!

                            So, I am really debating whether or not I want to purchase this group any more.

                            His price for the group is 125 Euros, it includes:

                            The soldbuch
                            2 Fuhrerscheins
                            his dog tag
                            Extra Documents (that still need identifying)
                            Letter from a French lady
                            and 60+ pictures

                            So, even with the non-battle damage-damage, is that a fair price for that group? What do you think?
