U-240 Soldbuch to Ob. Masch. Wilhelm Eller

Eller joined the Kriegsmarine in 1938 and was awarded to Memel Medal.
Served on fangboot M-551 in 1942. Unfortunately, Eller and the entire crew of U-240 were lost only 3 days into their first combat patrol on 15.05.1944. The cause of the sinking remains unknown.

Soldbuch to Oblt. Johannes Froarth, U-231, U-878, U-716. Froarth appears to have served on a wide array of Kriegsmarine vessels before ending with the U-Boat arm.

        Summary of Froarth's career:
        1941: Seekadet on-board Destroyer Z6
April 1942-April 1943: Fähnrich with various Minesweepers
May 1943: Oberfähnrich on first patrol of U-231 under Kptlt. Wolfgang Wenzel (included with the soldbuch were 8 images taken by Froath during this patrol showing re-fueling with U-504)
November 1943: Leutnant z.s. with torpedo boat
June-September 1944: ARGU front training with U-878 under Oblt. Rodig
February(?) 1945 - surrender: On-board U-716 under Oblt Jurgen Thimme
May 1st 1945: Final promotion to Oblt. z.s.

U-boot kriegsabzeichen 5.3.1945 after first(?) patrol with U-716 (since he already took part on a patrol with U-231)

        U-boot frontspange in Bronze/ EK II 9.4.1945

I have unfortunately been unable to find any records of Herr Froarth's service online. Any help would be much appreciated

              Ian,

Thank you for informing me. This really helps shed much more light on his service career. Interesting that he was not awarded the U-Boot abzeichen until so late in his service.

              Kind Regards,

              Jake

Looks like he received his U-Boat Badge after his fourth patrol. One with U-218 and three with U-716.

5.3.1945 is an usual date for the his award as U-Boat awards were normally made on the day or day after arrival in port. Check the dates for his U-Boat Bar and EK II.

Everth must have been on the first patrol of U-231, 13.4.43 - 31.5.43 (49 days).
19.5.1943 U-231 in Position BD 27 is assigned to the Wolf Pack MOSEL. On the same Day, the Boat in the Plan-quadrat BD 83 meets with U-504 and takes on 24 tons of fuel.

The three with U-716 were only 20 days so that perhaps is why he had four patrols:

                7.1.45 - 12.1.45 (6 days)
                6.2.45 - 12.2.45 (7 days)
                18.2.45 - 24.2.45 (7 days)

                Other patrols:

                12.3.45 - 9.4.45 (29 days)
                21.4.45 - 28.4.45 (8 days)

                /Ian
