Gentlemen all I can say is wow.

These are some dream U-Boat Soldbuchs, especially desiros and christofs.

Thanks for letting us all take a look and for all the extra details.

-and let me know if ya ever want to sell them!

          Regards,

          Axel

            Hi Christof,

Thank you very much for showing two very nice UBoat Soldbücher.

The new U 846 needed some experienced men in her new crew and Peters who served prior on U 172 was clearly such a man.
Interesting to see that Emmermann signed for the clothing as that was normally done by another ranking.
            U 172 a famous Uboat and a great Commander.

Your Mändle Soldbuch, I have no idea what happened to U 978 crewmembers earlier handed out Soldbücher, all others that I have seen and the one I have in my own collection are all dated 15.Febr.1945, all done in the same hand on page 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Seems to me that your example was also first written in pencil and later overwtitten in ink.

U 978 made the longest Schnorkel patrol of world war two.

Seems that all new portrait photos for the new U 978 Soldbücher were taken onboard U 978, they all have the same appearance (that dark background)

Again thank you for showing Christof.

            yours friendly

            Eric-Jan

Here is the Soldbuch of Obermaschinist Harry Hedwig.

Typical photo which has been replaced most probably due to promotion as no awards are shown.
Again typical for U-Boat crews with a "U" on page 1, this one has a smaller "U" also!?!? Authorised by FP Nr. 42766 - 5 U-Flottille Kommando (Schulflottille).
It can be seen from Herr Hedwig's dog tag number he joined the Kriegsmarine in 1938.

The Soldbuch was issued 27.5.1941 by 1 Marine Unteroffizier Lehrgang Glücksburg.

Page 3 bears confirmation of promotions on page 1.

Promotion to Obermaschinenmaat authorised by Kommandant FP Nr. 42202 - U-Boot 406, Kapitänleutnant Horst Dieterichs.
Promotion to Obermaschinist authorised by a Leutnant u. Kompanie Chef, 5 Kompanie, 4 Marine Lehr Abteilung.

                  Page 4 shows his awards:

                  6.7.1942 U-Boat Badge
                  11.10.1942 Iron Cross 2nd Class
                  14.10.1944 U-Boat Bar
                  20.4.1945 Iron Cross 1st Class
                  20.4.1945 U-Boat Bar in Silver

Note: the U-Boat Bar is entered without mention of a class, at the time the Silver version did not exist.

First two awards are authorised by Kapitänleutnant Horst Dieterichs with the next three being authorised by Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Heinrich Barschkis, Kommandant U-2321.

The U-Boat Badge was awarded 6.7.1942 on return from U-406 second voyage, with the Iron Cross 2nd Class following the third voyage. On this voyage U-406 sank the British 7,452 ton "City of Manila" sailing with convoy SL-118 on 19.8.1942.
The U-Boat Bar was awarded 14.10.1944 for accumulation of enemy voyages aboard U-408. At the time Herr Hedwig had completed 7.
The Iron Cross 1st Class and U-Boat Bar in Silver followed the first voyage of U-2321 after the sinking of the the British 1,406 ton "Gasray" on 5.4.1945. Thus bringing the total voyages for Herr Hedwig to 8 aboard U-Boats.

Page 20 shows a security check authorised by Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Heinrich Barschkis at this time with FP Nr. 45127 - Ausbildungs-Gruppe Front (B.d.U.), Technische Ausbildungs-Gruppe für Front-U-Boote.

Underneath all the Feindeinsatz that Hedwig took part in. Interestingly during the Norwegian campaign he was aboard the S-Boot Tender "Carl Peters" and as you can see 7 Feindfahrt with U-406 and 1 with U-2321.

This entry is also verified by Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Heinrich Barschkis.

Page 23 recording units and transfers shows he was with 2 Unterseebootslehr Division in Gotenhafen, 2 Unterseebootsausbildungsabteilung in Neustadt/Holstein.
27.8.1941 to the Baubelehrung Danzig (7 Kriegsschiffbaulehrabteilung) for commissioning of his new ship, U-406.
21.10.1941 to 8 U-Flottille (U-Boat Training Flotilla)......on the right of the page FP Nr. M 14971 can be seen. This belonged to 7 U-Flottillen Kommando.

Because we know what unit built U-406, what Flotillas it was under it can be worked out of course what U-Boat he was aboard, however without this information page 23 does not reveal his U-Boat at all!

                      http://www.ubootwaffe.net/ops/boat.cgi?boat=406

                      After 25.9.1943 to numerous schools.

Page 24 again shows training and schooling units. From 16.3.1944 with 3 Baulehrkompanie in Hamburg. With research this was part of 8 Kriegsschiffbaulehrabteilung.....again of which ties in with his next boat U-2321!

                        http://www.ubootwaffe.net/ops/boat.cgi?boat=2321

However, this time the page does actually reveal his boat!!!

                        12.6.1944 FP Nr. 41224 "2321" 32 Ufl.

FP Nr. 41224 - U-Boot 2321. Which was of course under 32 U-Flottille (Ausbildungsflottille) in Königsberg

                              U-boot

Here's my lonely U-Boot Soldbuch. It's been around and I think Barry had it once. Paul Jung (can yous ee why I kept his one?) was on three patrols with U-755 and died on board, along with 40 others. There were nine survivers.

                                U-boot

Paul's lone award, the U-boot badge and his unit page. He had his commander's (Göing) signature faintly on the award page.
