WOW Rick
It's downright chilling how that piece of shrapnel took out the soldiers eyes in the portrait photo..... Symbolic in a way, as the same piece of shrapnel no doubt ended his life Damn...........
A very interesting and sobering Soldbuch you have there... Thanks for sharing it with us.

Wasner served with the Radfahr-Zug of IR 503, 290th ID in France and Russia. Present throughout the battles around Demyansk. Wounded twice. The second time in late 1943 from artillery shrapnel in the chest. For his service at Demyansk he was awarded the Demyansk Shield while recovering in hospital. On release he was not returned to 290th ID in Russia during 1944. Instead Wasner was transfered to the forming 340th VGD slated for the Western Front. Interestingly he was posted to the VG Artillery Regiment instead of a divisional VG Grenadier Regiment.

Great thread, let me contribute
Johann Weinberger was in the German army since 1938, he participated with the annexation of the Sudetenland and wears the medal on his pass photo. He was promoted to Obergefreiter in 1940 and would stay at this rank till the rest of the war. Since January 1944 he served in the 990 Grenadier Regiment of the 277 Infanterie Division in Narbonne at the south cost of France. The unit went to the Normandy front where it got caught in the Falaise pocket and got reduced to roughly 10-15% of the original strength. It was rebuilt in Hungary present Slovakia, renamed to 277 Volksgrenadier Division, and was sent to the Westwall for a month. In November Johann received a G43. After this the unit participated in the Battle of the Bulge at the northern flank. Together with the 12 SS division it took the Belgian town Rocherath-Krinkelt which it defended until the end of January. It retreated again to the Westwall and fought in the Eiffel where it got decimated. Johann got wounded in April 45, there are no further entries.Attached Files
