Thomas... I have a Soldbuch/Wehrpass grouping to a Afrika vet who served in the very same batterie (6./Pz.Art.Rgt.155) as your guy! They certainly would have known one another and fought side by side in Afrika! Looks like your guy stayed with the 21.Pz.Div all the way through the end of the war... my guy went on to serve in StuG.Abt.237 and then Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 219, but they still served together in Afrika. Nice to see another book from the very same batterie as the set in my collection.

EDIT: judging from the last field unit entry on page 17, your guy could very well have been a crew member (radio operator) on a Hummel, as Pz.Art.Rgt.155 was outfitted with Wespes and Hummels when rebuilt after being destroyed in Afrika.

here is also a post war denazification document where his rank is given as Leutnant der Reserve and his las unit listed as 15. Pz Gren Div

Rob, now it gets interesting as attached is his black wound badge document dated 16 April, 1945. In the Soldbuch on page 22 the black wound badge is entered with a date of "16 April, 1944". It is my opinion that the black wound badge is the only valid entry with the "5" being changed to a "4" in order to make sense. I got this Soldbuch about 15 years ago when the prices were much better and I have always been of the opinion that this one has been "upgraded". Due to the fact that the base he was in (Schwetzingen, Panzer Kaserne) is right down the road from me, I opted to purchase it anyway. His name is also not in the DKig listing although this listing is not complete and at the time the price was right!

I agree with you that the BWB entry is the only "legitimate" award entry on the page.

Seeing as how you posted the Soldbuch without making mention of them, and considering the scope of your knowledge - not to mention the quality of the items in your collection - when I first saw the awards page I didn't think much of it and just assumed all was OK. However, a closer look and some digging quickly reveals that they were added post-war. I personally do not keep any IDs with bogus entries - but I know there are a few guys (like Ian) who do - I believe Ian sometimes covers the bogus entries with a strip of paper. I guess if I had this one, I'd keep it too - considering the great portrait photo, and it sounds like you got it for a great price
