          Hello Jungco,

I have just noticed the registration of the last unit on the page 22. Is it well question of the Pz Jg Abt 353 ?

          Cordial greetings.

              Hi guys,

Some really great and rare soldbuchs shown here, thanks very much for sharing. While writing the CCC book, I became very interested in documents and groupings to these soldiers and has opened up a new and interesting aspect of this hobby for me.

Barry, it was great to meet you at the show, thanks for taking the time to post these soldbuchs. The Vetter buch is excellent and I would say quite rare in the fact that no wound badge is listed. This is quite rare for a CCC recipient as the very nature of this badge is close combat!

On the LAH buch, do you have his CCC days from the buch and are any listed in France? That is also something very rarely seen, days listed other than on the Eastern Front.

Rob, you also show some very excellent buchs. Is the CCC date in Riedl's buch Jan. 25th, 1943? If so, that is the earliest CCC listing I believe I have ever seen! The earliest award document I have is from February of 1943, both of these are quite impressive since it usually took many months to go up the chain of command and since the award was only introduced in November 25th, 1942.

Also, that Schmidt grouping and Steiner grouping are very impressive. Is that an FLL CCC with the Schmidt grouping? Can you show a shot of the reverse of the clasp for us? The Steiner group is interesting as you can see the typical retroactive CCC days counted 1 - 5, and then immediately jumping 1.5 years ahead to the Kursk battle. No doubt the Germans were pulling every available soldier up for this collosal battle.

              THanks guys.

              Tom
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                    Polux,
You are right. His last unit was Pz Jag. Abt. 353. There was no indication he was KIA, in the Soldbuch, except for a small piece of paper in the back pocket that said: "Nachlass des Obergefr. Ernst Hippe konnte infolge der Kampfhandlungen nicht abgenommen werden." From the Graebesuche I learned he was KIA on 12.Apr.45.

                      Tom,

Thanks for the complements! Yes, the date is 25 January 1943. Here's a close-up shot of the entry. Unfortunately, there is no paste-in sheet listing the Nahkampftag dates that made him eligible for the award...

Tom- Yes, it is a FLL. I don't have pics of the back, but I can send you some the next time I have the grouping home (everything is at the bank in the safe deposit boxes!)

The Steiner Soldbuch was a real surprise, as I could not make out the dates in the pictures I was provided with when I purchased the book - it was only after it arrived that I discovered several of the dates qualifying him for the CCC were in fact from the Battle of Kursk!

These CCCs book just reek of history; notice how most of them (the first issue books especially) are heavily worn, as would be expected considering the amount and type of combat these guys had to endure. These books were carried on the battlefields and in the trenches, and no doubt witnessed some horrific and brutal combat!!!

Tom, Max Vetter did, in fact, receive the Black Wound Badge on 22 December 1944. I just didn't inlcude a photo of this page. Max was crouching down in a foxhole when a shell fragment hit his elbow. This wound put him out of action and for the rest of his life, his arm was permanently locked at the elbow. Incidentally, Vetter was a weaver by trade and then became a factory worker. Along with General Lieb, who also was from Freundenstadt, Max received a plot of land from the city on which to build his home.

No, I don't have the close combat listing for the Fiedler LAH Soldbuch. You are right, you don't see as many close combat listings for soldiers who served on the Western Front in 1944, mainly because the German Army was "on the move" then so to speak.
