Soldbuch of German POW in Italy

    Hello

I picked up this soldbuch which was bought back by an English soldier who befriended the owner in Syracuse POW camp in Italy as the German soldier spoke english and translated for the camp

I wonder if anyone could help with any information on the Unit this soldier fought with?

    Thanks

    John

In early 1943 he belonged to Füsilier-Ersatz-Btl. 34 in Hagenau/Alsace. He was then transferred to what appears to be 4. Kp./Marsch-Btl. z.b.V. 144 (I have no idea where that was located), and then this was sent immediately to Italy where it became Festungs-Btl. 904 around 12 June 1943. That battalion was disbanded o/a 7 August 1943 and absorbed into Pz.Gren.Rgt. 125. It fought in the Catania area on Sicily attached to Pz.Gren.Div. Hermann Göring. He was captured before 7 August because his SB has no entry after Fest.Btl. 904.

Thank you very much Larry for the information, that is very interesting,

I thought I would post a few more pages, he was issued alot of equipment (wonder if the first items are returned before being issued with tropical equipment?)

I wondered what a Klapphacke was, I done a literal translation and it gave me folding chops? Would this be a folding shovel?

I would think anything duplicated by the tropical issue would have to be turned in, as well as anything not authorized in a tropical theater such as Sicily.

In Post #10 he was in the hospital and that is a hospital receipt given in exchange for all money, paper of value and valuables that he turned in. That was a routine procedure in hospitals and still is today.

thanks again Larry, I also done a search online also and found a good site, I now know he was a Corpral, was married, no entry for parents so perhaps they were deceased, I will have to get my friends father to read some of the writing for me, last name, town he lived in also it has an entry for his job before he joined up, looks like maybe he worked in a Market ?

                            Cheers

Post #2 under Beruf it looks like "M(i?)h Arbeiter" - some sort of worker but I can't decipher the first word. There are some fellows here who are real good at Sütterlin, so hopefully they'll be able to figure it out for you.
