I've been doing a little reading and can add a little more background to this landser's fate. The date of his death is significant, the 14.1.44 because it was on this day that the Soviet 59th Army launched a major attack preceeded by a 3 hour artillery barrage against the Volkhov sector being held by the XXXVIII armeekorps which included 1 LW field division and the 28 Jäger Division deployed between Teremets and Slutka along the Volkhov river north of Novgorod. The Jägers beat back the first assault but a breakthrough was later achieved to the South against the positions of the 1 LW Div.
