Here is my attempt at translation (Hope my poor english makes sense.):


"Liebe Mutter!

Da ich nichts neues weiß, will ich Dir wenigstens eine Karte zukommen lassen. Geht mir noch gut, was ich auch von Dir noch hoffe. Habe von Dir bis jetzt noch keine Post, heute erhielt ich ...(?) vom 11.1. was ja schon lange etwas altes ist. Auch war Fritz gestern wieder bei mir. Der Kuchen war sehr gut, auch alles andere. Ich will nun für heute schließen, es grüßt Dich Dein Hein. Gruß an alle."


"Dear Mother!

Since I know nothing new, I wanted to send you a card at least. I am still well, I hope your are also still well. Quite possible. (At least the card seems to indicate that the mother would definitely know who Fritz is.)

If so, he is probably a good deal younger. Considering the late date and the military situation at that time, he doesn't sound like he's fighting anywhere. Fritz , on the hand, probably would be - considering his birthdate of 1927.

Interestingly enough, it's not even close to Berlin. Coburg lies at the northernmost border of Bavaria.

[EDIT: Unfortunately, I can't "deciper" his place of birth which might shed some light. All I got is ...gshausen. ]

ah maybe i have it wrong he has signed of as hein maybe pet name for heinz and fritz is the mate or brother???
