Yes, this part of the hobby has been ruined by some dealers selling their fake docs.
Now people are finding out about the fakes.
    It’s going to get ugly.

Rob, are pictures enough on these award docs or does one need to have a good grasp of what to look for in hand to decipher original from fake?
      Looking for a 30 '06 Chauchat magazine.

Reminds me a little of the Paul Conrath case.

in my opinion it was a good fake. The gold lettering was done sloppy, and the skin used was too thick.

            Hi Gents --

A couple of days ago a member here dropped me a PM. We chatted a little in private and he quickly mentioned things of my interest. In hind view I believe he had studied my interests here on WAF in order to know how to catch my attention.

To my surprise and without having brought up the topic of formal swords documents, he showed me a Rommel formal swords document with cassette this morning. He said he had picked it up from a 70 year old collection in Austria this weekend.

It is exactly the same fake/reproduction as shown here:

            And sold here:

I broke contact with this clown now. In a next step he would have probably offered it to me for sale.

You can never be too careful with these con-men and scammers floating through the forums. BEWARE!

That is a very subjective and scary comment. An item should always stand on it's own physical merits alone. Each dealer, regardless of who it is, makes mistakes and sells fakes (Including Mr Weitze). Know the item yourself and don't rely solely on the expertise of someone who has "skin in the game." I've seen the best items at the lowest prices at the least reliable dealers and the most expensive fakes with those with the highest reputation.

Buy the item, not the dealer; unless you need someone to help with the housework. LOL.

Sorry, there is a misunderstanding. I was referring to this document in particular, not to the Swords one!

The "Rommel formal swords document" by http://www.ritterkreuzurkunden.com is a very bad replica with the eagle and all metal parts, frames included, made of gilded resin!
