Yes, I can see how it may look that way to some collectors Gentry.

Even on the e-stand thread the images are just links to an outside server, so I'm uploading the images here so they're not lost to the discussion. Certainly looks like a "4-only" marked example like Leroy's (although admittedly we can't see the area under the pin to know whether there's an L/16 hidden there).

        Best regards,

Hi Norm, I thought the same thing at first, but the seller's description is pretty detailed and he only mentions the "4" mark. I've PM'd the seller to confirm.

I also noticed what looks like pretty significant flaws on the top arm of the eagle swastikas. They seem to be consistent on 3 of the eagles, but don't see it on the 4th which is weird. What to make of that? These eagle's don't have the head flaw, but they do seem to have a swastika flaw.....and yet the eagles with the head flaws do not have the swastika flaw??.....

To a lot of collectors based on what I hear at shows and read in PM's and e-mails....

P.S. Flaws come and go sometimes, just based on frequency and thoroughness of die maintainance during production.

Gentry, what do you think of the flaws on this piece? Do they look like the type of flaws that "come and go" or more of the permanent type in you opinion?

And then a followup question, what type of flaw do you think the head cap flaw is? Do you think it is the type of flaw that can come and go as you describe?

                Thanks

Gee, I'm sorry to hear about that perception. I don't get out that much from the KM forum but I like to think that mostly it's for interesting and thought-provoking discussions.

In this current thread for example, I don't see any major conflict over anyone's heartfelt wartime S&L Spanish cross -- just an exploration of the finer points which is always required for a maker like S&L.

And I like to think that the 2805 hits on this thread in the last two weeks were indicative of a stimulating topic rather than a freak show.

                  Best regards,
                  ---Norm

                    Hi guys,

Just FYI, heard back from the seller of this cross and it is only marked "4". No L/16 to be found on it.

Tom - The flaw on the swastika arm does not look to be 100% consistant in exact shape on the arms where it shows up. On one, it shows a decided curve and on the other 2, it seems shorter on one than on the other. As a pure GUESS I am wondering is it's not caused by some sort of extraction (hang-up?) problem.

The "head flaw" seems, on the other hand, to be consistant in size and shape. Again guessing, is this caused by an actual impact crater of some kind leaving a "hole" on the die?

Indeed Norm, and you can be sure that everyone is reading our discussion and hanging on every word, whether they agree or not with the findings.

Gentry, thanks for the thoughts on the flaws. The seller has said he will post some more pics of the cross tonight so hopefully we will get some better pictures of the flaws in question. They look pretty consistent to me but could just be the angle of the pics.

I see very little consistancy at all, but I'm happy to wait on more photos.
