My question regarding these is: If they were made in Stalingrad (or wherever in wartime Russia) who the heck for? It's not like the Russians would pin one on, would they? Would they make prisoners wear them? Tape them to dead guys? Seems like they could've been doing about a zillion other things more productive than making crosses....

Of course, being in the military myself, I am aware of "wasted time".

The original sovjet propaganda cross has no "dots" above the "U" in the word FÜR, i.e is mis-spelled "FUR".

I know nothing of these crosses, but according to the German Dictionary that I have fur with the dots over the u means for, I don't find fur without the dots?

According to Gordon's book page 158:

" A Propaganda Iron Cross made by the Soviets in 1941, cleverly substitutes the date 1941, the year that Germany invaded the Soviet Union, for the original 1939 date. These were made in both 1st and 2nd class form, and are single piece construction. According to Russian Research published in a German magazine in the 1980's, only around 500 were produced, sometime during the period of the siege of Leningrad"

As far as doing a zillion things besides making these crosses .. I suppose they could have, but how much time and energy did all the warring factions take in making propaganda pieces? Whether they were leaflets dropped or Iron Crosses made to insult a high award piece .. it all strikes the same chord.

could you post the reverse of the cross with the pin open please. It looks like a propaganda cross made by the Sovjets in 1941 and - if real - is fairly rare since only 500 seem to have been produced. Which leads me to believe, as a first thought, that this might not be the real deal. Better pictures of the front beading might also help.

As to the why's behind this cross, I'll leave to others.

For me though, the first class cross posted by Killjoy is a fake/repro. The main pin is the huge giveaway - as StefanK has already mentioned/hinted, the exact same pin is found on recent ?Latvian "standard" 1939 EK1 repros. If it had been dated as 1998 (plus or minus a year or two) instead of 1941, I'd have said it was genuine!
