Leroy that was my feeling, but I don't know enough about them to make a judgement. The eagle worries me.

IMO it's 100% original to him. It's been around for several years & I know it had good provenance with it.

When I was at Westpoint I asked the curator to show me the other Knights Crosses they have. He brought out a board on which were mounted a Knights Cross, a Knights Cross with Oaks, and a Knights Cross with Swords. All three were fakes and we did not even scan or photograph the board, it was too bad.
We were told that sometimes the items were given out to school classes for demonstrations and that it could very well be that in the earlier days items were switched.
Could have happened with the hat also?

Most likely, IMO. CanĀ“t imagine that hat being worn by a General...

They've been the same since at least 1985, when Bowen photographed them, so any "switch" must have occurred before then. The top one (w/OS) is a Souval cross, while the lower ones appear to be S&L's. Would have been nice to photograph them in detail and in color, and see the accession cards, but certainly that could still be done if anyone is in the area and could call West Point in advance.

P.S. The ribbons appear to have white edging and are not the typical type used by S&L in the 50's-60's.

Maybe there are some period pix from Sepp Dietrich wearing this hat. Should be easy to determinate such a "special" hat...

Maybe, maybe......I'd be glad to be mistaken, as it would once again show that 'textbook' doesn't always hold true.
