Sorry to know what has happened to you, Antonio. Hope everything works out.
How can customs holdback a EK1, as Stefan has said? It is incredible! Don't they know we buy EKs and other TR items for collecting purposes? Don't they know this is HISTORY? Do they think we are dangerous criminlas or something?

Sadly all parcels outside EU coming into EU are scanned and - if deemed required - contents checked against Customs Declaration.
If no value declared, Customs are allowed to hold the shipment till such has been established.
They could contact seller or buyer asking for an invoice ( proving payment ) or they can do research.

The knife cuts both ways of course ....

        1. No insurance + low value + item arrives without extra charges = happy buyer
        2. No insurance + low value + item lost / stolen = bad luck, minimum refund if possible
        3. Insurance full value + item lost / stolen = full refund if proof can be delivered
        4. Insurance full value + items arrives + huge charges ( VAT + import = unhappy buyer

Again, I do hope in this particular case Customs are merely holding it till value is established.
In that case, they will contact you asking for further proof of value ( invoice / mails / etc. )
If you cannot provide, they will charge you the highest rate possible ( at least in my country ).

        Good luck,
        Mathijs

I had a GAB held up for 4 months with Qatar customs during the time of the Arab spring, I guess they figured I was going to inspire a revolution with it

I only got it delivered finally by visiting the CID bureau and having a letter written to the Minister of the Interior explaining the situation. A nice, minty Deumer too, there was no way I was letting that go!

That's why you should ONLY use a company that not gives the item sent to another company when crossing the border. Fed-ex, UPS or DHL.
You will be able to track your package the entire route.

              Hi Antonio,
What do you mean by "After custom office delivered the package here in Italy it disappeared."?
Why would the customs office be delivering mail?
And how do you know the customs office delivered it?

Sorry to hear. Hope it will arrive safely sooner or later!!

Here in Holland the tax is also very high. When I order from overseas with a value written on the customs papers I have to pay an extra 40% of the value just for tax. It's a lot of money but with some high end items I prefer to pay the extra bit than to risk losing an item. It makes me feel a bit more safe and secure.

I know the feeling. Hope it turns up some time soon. I lost some big $ eBay-items sent from Poland not too long ago. Not sure if it got lost in the mail ore because of dishonest seller.

When it comes to VAT and taxes here in Norway, we have a special tax-regulation saying you only have to pay tax on 20% of the value on collectibles and antiques.
On other items you have to pay 25% tax on the full amount.

Not too many know this special regulation, and not even the people declaring the mail sent to Norway.

                    Hi Brett

Ive been retired for a while now but I used to work for the Post office (HQ) here in Canada so I suspect things are pretty much the same in all countries since we are all regulated by same governing body (UPU Union Postale Universelle)

Before leaving a country for delivery to another country through the postal system (or courriers) , items are gatethered at a customs office (called exchange office) for inspection and preparation by customs (not postal or courrier) officials for shipping to destination customs. Technically, while in international transit the mail belongs to Customs not postal administration or courrier. Upon receipt it is inspected and assessed for applicable fees by Customs at country of destination before being released to destination postal/courrier administration for delivery. Nowaday customs offices are located directly inside large postal processing plants and Courrier facilities (Purolater, UPS, Fedex etc) to speed up the process but they are still separate entities.

It may not make a hell of a lot of difference to the poor SOB who lost a prized possession but in this context an item can dissappear in either of 4 the entities: postal/courrier system of origin, customs of origin, customs of destination and postal/courrier system of destination and each records items in transit (tracking) for legal as well as statistical purposes. So I think what Antonio is saying here is that his DKiG can successfully be tracked as far down the line as the Italian Customs service but it dissappears into the "Twighlight Zone" somewhere after hitting the Italian Postal Service

                      Hi JC,
                      Thanks for the detailed explanation

Thieving from the mail is the lowest of the low, I sure hope this is not the case here and that it's just been delayed and turns up soon.

Sorry to hijack this thread but can anyone tell me why the DKIG shown in the link looks as if it's been pop riveted? Is it genuine do you think?

                          Hi Lampwick,

You can always start your own thread with these questions, no problem.

But anyway... a 15 rivet DK! How about that? I can't say much about it except that it's got a lot of rivets.

Antonio, Stranger things have turned up... There is a thread on here about a stolen medal bar found 4 years later. I really do hope this turns up soon for you.

                              Thank you, Scott

It truly sucks when this happens. The Italian postal service would have some welcome company from Canada Post in the miserable service club.

Hope for the miracle and maybe it will turn up...like was said earlier...stranger things have happened.

                                Cheers,

                                Glen
