                  This is a strange one...

In the book "The Prussian and German Iron Cross", by author V. E. Bowen, it states this Knight's Cross is attributed to Luftwaffe ace Walter Nowotny. But I was under the impression Nowotny's KC was destroyed at the crash on November 1944.

It could be a second set presented to Nowotny's widow or family?

Maybe someone knows a bit more about this

Sometimes, when awarded the OLs or the OLs and Swords, the receiptant got a completely new set (OLs and a new KC etc.).
It was not unusual, that a KC holder had more than one cross.

RK awarded to Oberstleutnant Bruno Karczewski
                          Kommandeur, I. Bataillon, Grenadier-Regiment 162
                          Awarded on: March 12th, 1944

Karczewski also was awarded the Oak Leaves, but due to the war's circumstances he was never able to get the set. Instead, he got this front-line made oaks.
