What the heck is the grave photo for, Peter? Is this supposedly the RK recipient? That is very odd ! I too would think a photo of the hinge, catch and answering about UV glow would be more helpful. If this was original, the guy would be open, as the piece would stand for itself without theatrical "props".

Hi Tom,
It's KB and D&B (very close ) they were the 'main' award box makers, of course they don't have to be marked say from the likes of a perhaps 'smaller' maker. Great posting Tom the only thing I'd be a little cautious over is in the old olfactory sense !
This is where I get confused as I type this, the more recently made repro's will have a distinct smell about them......a new 'paper' fresh sort of smell the older the repro's are or indeed in conjuction with 1960's East German boxes and more of the likes.....will smell typically like you'd expect an old one to smell, and they do have that 'old' odour alot of originals have. Is the smell replicated....I doubt it very much not intentionaly by the fake box makers, famous last words there ! Owners, dealers is anyone's guess and I'd guess yes from what I've encouterd.
It all gets rather confusing: conversely when you deliberate the enviroment it has been in the last 60 or so years etc. It could smell of pine wood to cigarette smoke, the new fakes could be smell aged via putting them old furniture and a multitude of other factors.
I was talking to very interesting man not so long ago, and he binds/restores very old books for museum's, namely the British museum whom he actually works for. The mans been doing it for near on 30 years, and was a very interesting gentleman to talk too.
Anyway, the smell thing.....it is taken in to account in regard to 'books' and some other paper items of course, to an extent with a combination of other things. We'll have to talk about glue another day, I've some interesting info on that too.
I've heard and read several time's the quote, 'it smells like an old one', I'd just be very careful when doing this and don't let it lead a sale or base any opinion on it. Apart from of course if it smelt like the box your waffles come in from Walmart then walk away for sure.
RK & DK boxes are new untread ground for me, not having that much exposure to them in hand.....I'll have to learn all I can from you guy's on these.
Kind regards,
Marcus
