As others have said leave it alone. This is patina/age and its the way they should look when the "newsilber" paint/finish is worn off. Here is mine with similar patina on front and the finish almost intact on the back. Still looking for a nice vaulted EK I 1914 with the same dark patina to make a set

I know the evidence is poor but it is solid. I was there together with MB on the auction to see the group for the first time. The box had never left this cardboard box and the spange never left that box. More evidence is always welcome OF COURSE, but for me it's safe to say these pieces were made by Schmidhäußler for 99,9%.Kind regards,
