Hi Dornier,

Alex has answered already: some Träger wore the EK2 at the throat so they would not damage or lose their original RK. There was no provision for this practice in the rules that I have ever heard of (and it would shock me) but obviously it was tolerated.

I can well understand active soldiers not wanting to lose the RK in battle etc. I'd probably prefer to get a second one (if that was allowed), but if not this is a second best. These don't appear to be EKIIs awarded in place of the RK because it couldn't be obtained as there's no attempt to alter the ribbon ring. Very interesting shots

I doubt that you will find anyting in the "rules" about using a EK II instead a RK.
But as you can see in many pictures, it was accpepted.

There are vet accounts of the EK2 being used as a "Pre" award to a well liked commander or fellow soldier in the field before the presentation date...
I have had a couple of such in the past... wish I still had them.

If find very interesing the fact that on first photo, the One has made surely on a photography study, he still wear the second class instead of original RK. In that photo seem he choosed his awards very well.
I mean that it is loable that he wear his ek2 on field but very curious on a studio photo... At the same time is is possible that the RK was not with him at the moment the picture was made.

He was awarded the RK on March 23, 1945. Hauptmann Rolf Düe, Kompanie-Chef of 1st Company, Panzerjäger Abteilung 19 (19 Panzer Division).

I have two field or "Ersatz" knights crosses ,both aquired as EK2,s
I think it was a fairly common practice towards the end of the war ,
One of mine has an original RK loop and ribbon but is a modified EK2.
The other is anEK1 with pin etc removed and a EK2 ring attached .

I have no doubt they were worn as RK.s

Soldiers, who lost their RK in combat or other events of war got a replacement for free. Those, who wanted a second piece, had to obtain it from the "Praesidialkanzlei". As far as I know, price for a RK was Reichsmark 16,-...
