    A cleaned up RK KVK

Let me state I'm not one for cleaning medals, you can ruin the look in a second of good intention and whats taken years to evolve on the medal.

It's each to their own, I don't prescribe to it thats my choice, there are exceptions and if done with knowledge and care can enhance ones medals (ones medals- I sound like the Queen )

I've never been happy with this RK KVK which was a part of a refund by a dealer whom I bought many fakes from, it was tarnished and not very pretty; I've seen some super examples owned by members on here though

Whilst at Franks he divulged an 'old wives' cure for tarnished silver without any after effects of damaging the 'frosting' (what littles left on the obverse of mine).

Dubious and cautious and under no obligation like a young maiden I let Frank lead the way ! It is a tried and tested 'cleaning' process on silver and my RK KVK looked unsightly to me so I went ahead and dipped it into the solution (after much debate and thought)

In fact post the process you can vaguely see more traces of frosting evident on the obverse and the chrome effect on the arm rims........just. The pictures don't do it justice, in this country I seem to live in a perpetual dullness !!

When dried it was dabbed NOT rubbed, no other rubbbing or brushing was used it just lay in the solution for two minutes and was then rinsed in clean cold water.

What do you guys think ? I'm very happy with the mild results and don't feel I crossed over the line with it.

How does she look to you guys ?

    Thanks for looking,

    Kind regards,

    Marcus

        Nice one Marcus.

Each to his own and all that, if people want to leave their stuff looking all grotty and tarnished (or is that beautifully patinated ?) good luck to 'em.

Your KVK is proof that cleaning can have a beneficial effect. Can you do me some pics for the KVK book please ?

Bleach, acid, urine from a goat........ No,tin foil in the bottom of a dish, water, some cleaning solution (water and cleaning solution 50/50) from say a 'dish washer' and copious amounts of salt.

No vinegar or lemon juice, thats what we used over here years ago.

          Kind regards,

          Marcus

PS It only works really on silver, Frank may be able to fill you in on any other details.

It was German and available from over here (Aldi-shop) and called callgon I think.

If you require any, I'll send you some I know you can get it from over here in the UK.

                Kind regards,

                Marcus

                  Calgon take me away

Calgon? In the US Calgon is a bath soap that harried housewives soak in to "escape" the rigors of being a mom..

Dishwasher soap, like Cascade, has got all kinds of stuff in it..including bleach..this is some caustic stuff, read the label. But I suppose if it can loosen dried eggs, grime shouldnt be a problem..

We have similar Mark, just different marketing it's callled 'Radox' what a load of........! It's mean't to realx you.......how on earth I don't know ???? Aimed at Mums of course.

Frank can confirm it, I'm sure it was Callgon, we have the same over here 'washing machines live longer with Callgon', it gets rid of limescale etc. The name may be similar to the German one, but as Mark suggests lets confirm and get the facts straight.

The very same product can be purcahsed though from the German outlet Aldi over here, I'll get back to you on it (I'm the dish washer in our home, no mod con's )

                    Kind regards,

                    Marcus

I am certainly impressed, I am a staunch believer in not “messing” with things but the results really speak for themselves, congratulations Marcus, I bet there was some tense moments there when you were letting it sit in the solution. <O</O

I like both looks of the cross. First is the real battle worn look to be used on combat uniforms. The second look will be nice with a parade uniform.
