The EK has L/54, and a Stamped Star at the Bottom. Any ideas.

Hi there,
It's L59 (Rettenmaier) not L/54 (S&H).
Rettenmaier used many, many different ancillary marks on their EK1s. No one (that I know) knows for sure their purpose, but theories include inspection/quality marks, base material marks, assembler's marks, or distribution (intended sales market) marks.
I think you will likely find more information on which marks were used in George's upcoming EK1 book.Best regards,
Streptile
