in my opinion the back side is a post war S&L , as all DK by S&L.
        however a really nice example.

Perhaps one of our British members could ask the IWM about that.....

i think i need to point out that the first pic shown was only to establish what a s&l pin looked like , this is the cross in question

Different cross? What does the pin on this one have on it (if anything)? I'd go along with your earlier statement that the ones with pins marked "4" are a better bet.

as the pin has gone i don t know what the marking was hence why i used the pic of the other to see if that was the shape of the pin

IWM = Imperial War Museum in England. Very many of the German awards in their collection apparently came from Ludenscheid immediately after the war.

S&L is not known to have stamped postwar made parts with their assigned PKZ number ("4"). It is entirely possible, in fact likely, that DKIG's and DKIS's were assembled using wartime made parts after the war. It is my personal belief that if a DK from S&L is well-finished, the pin is marked "4", and the finish surrounding the pin, hinge and catch matches the finish on the rest of the cross, it was wartime assembled. If the finish in those areas does not match, it is a cross completed postwar.

thank you very much for explanation, really interesting.
things you have sayd could be true, never say never, especially about the end of war, but IMO there too many S&L to not have traces of their production during the WW2.
this is really an interesting theme..

                            Fabri,
Let me make myself more clear: I do believe S&L produced DK's during the war.
                            Best,
