    Steve,

I am not so quick to discount the pic. It looks like Horst Buttlar-Brandefels to me.

The PlM looks like one. Think the blotted out areas are glare of the enamel. If a Johanniter, I think it would have crowned heads on the eagles. Steve

      Oooooooo!
That could be a very good shout!
I don't think it is glare on the PLM (or whatever it is) but it looks like enamel damage to me, possibly from hitting the KC.

The picture does bear a resembelance. But what about the uniform discrepencies? Do you think this is wartime or postwar?

          Steve,

I make no claims to know about Luftwaffe uniforms. I only picked up on this because of the PlM mention in the thread title as you know I normally post in the Imperial section. But the PlM looks legit in the pic and the resemblence is striking. And it fits with his service record, etc.

He, being a general, may have made a custom tunic. Hard to say. The tunic and insignia does not appear to be fake, only odd for that rank, etc. But on the merits of the face and the PlM and the award of the KC, it all seems to fit. As to the flipped KC, it could be that it just flopped around, or maybe it was intentional. We'll never know. But as Dion pointed out, there are other pics of KC recipients with flipped KCs in photos. If I owned that pic, I would be very excited. My two cents. Steve

Same guy. They both have the same dent in the hairline left (his left) of center.

I am glad we are not all forensic scientists!

Pretty convincing side by side that I posted. I believe it to be the same man. He would be twently to twenty five years older here.

I defer to the TR experts on his KC, his bio, his OLs, etc. This is what I do know. He was a general, he did earn the PlM and it looks just like him. Let the fur fly. Steve

Which brings me to my question, was he a KC winner? If not, the pic is bad or it's not him..This should be easy to check, but I can"t find him as an awardee of the KC, muchless the oaks..
Plenty of info about his Zeppelin exploits and being in the German High Command who helped plan the Ardennes Offensive...

Whoever it is, I still think the "PLM" was retouched and inserted in the photo. Every other picture of a PLM wearer doesn't have the dark thick borders much less the abrupt transition to the lighter blotches. Try enlarging the photo and you will agree..

I have just gone through the OdR list of RK winners with Oaks.
No Buttlar Brandefels is listed from start to finish of WW11.
