"Orig period award , covered up to comply with 1957display/wear restrictions "

I thought that the Spanish Cross series was not authorized for wear in 1957 versions.

Well, I'm not sure anyone has an idea of how to tell a real from a fake. I guess it is assumed genuine because of who the sellers are? An $80,000 price tag on these things would be ample incentive for someone to produce a magnificent fake.

reverse is not the same but is the same as the one in for fuhur and fatherland and in C,Ailsbys publications ,the front plate is attached by small indented screws.

                          All thr pictures look different

What are the characteristics of this award that mark a genuine piece? Does anyone know the answer to this? Seems to me, the cost of producing a fake would be less than say half the price ($40,000) of a "genuine" item. Are there any authorities in the field, books on the subject, or threads on WAF, that could answer these questions?

Is there any info out there to suggest how many of these crosses were made, and how many now sit in collections?

I didnt think it was either.

however perhaps it is ment that the cross complied with German legal requirements post WW2 in that the Swastika had been removed/covered.

I believe there were 28 awarded. even if you give each man 3 copies you have less than 100. Then consider how many survive to this day. Not many total to be sure. I know of 3 in collections that I THINK are real. There is almost nothing out there about these and those who have them don't post pics much less reverse pics. I saw the W&H cross a few years back and Steven was kind enough to let me take pics but not of the reverse. I was surprised and delighted to see he finally did allow pics of the reverse. So far I have seen no way to determine the genuine from the fake for certain. My guess is the W&H one is a good one, the quality was outstanding. Some fakes seem fairly obvious such as the last 2 Merdock posted. It would be great to learn more about these but we would need the participation of some of the heavy hitters to get anywhere.
