Batons

Hello John,

I am guessing that you mean the actual batons they carried in their hands. Do a search on this site, in all forums. Type in baton. I know that Gordon Williamson provided some great photos of the Doenitz baton. There were two kinds. The grosstab, or ceremonial/formal occasion baton, and the interimstab, sometimes referred to as a walking stick.

Private Collections, Batons

Yes, there are some batons, particularly the interimstabs, that are in private collections.

The Göring baton at West Point mentioned by Pieter is the Reichsmarschall's baton with the white ivory cane. Göring's field marshal's baton, with the blue cane, awarded to him in 1938, at one time was on display in the Pentagon Building in Washington, D.C.. Telford Taylor tells about it in his book "Sword & Swastika", beginning of Chapter 5. He mentions that this baton was found at Göring's summer house at Berchtesgaden. The book is old, so it is possible that the baton is no longer there and at a different location. Anyone out there know for sure??

I could be wrong, but seem to remember that Eberhard Milch's interimstab was sold in the UK about 10 years, perhaps by Adrian Foreman, so it must be in private hands somewhere...I would've bought it, but my pocket-money and paper-round wouldn't stretch that far ! I saw the Doernitz baton in the "flesh" during a visit to the Shropshire L.I Museum last year -very, very impressive. All the best, Paul.
