I haven't studied 1st class spangen but I can tell you that this one feels lighter than a vet bring back that I have.
    Interesting to see this spange
box is marked L/10, yet the spange is what I call an L/16. If only there wasn't questionable pieces mixed in!
I've heard that L/10 'were' manufacturing spangen, but never seen one, maybe this is an authentic L/10 spangen box?

Tinmantis, Not glued in as I remember. I'll get the box out tomorrow and check for sure. I do not believe the Spange is original to the box but that will probably never be known. I would be happy to know the Spange is authentic. anybody else got an opinion on the 1st class spange.

The box is (in my classification) the large pattern, second series (with 2nd patt. LDO logo, never to my knowledge encountered with a first patt. logo) 'generic' sorts, not specifically for spangen at all, no.

You could have easily found say an EK2 (yes EK2 in these !! And devoid of ribbon at that too ) or a West Wall, a Memel........you name it really (within reason of course)

Frist series/first pattern (not all carried forward to the second series) cases - the incipeint sales examples there was criteria for colours to certain awards for example: the pale blue for spangen; large rectangular dark blue box for the black wound badge/West Wall; hard shell case with hinge and white base for KVK1 and EK1 and so on etc

The insert has a vertical slot with small circular holes (top & bottom) for catch and hinge.
