Interesting...I could see that being done. However, I think this is finger stuff...

Did they do that; Lacquering?

Well, no not really. However, I have heard that on unissued examples removed from the sales board that this did happen. Lacquer was applied to the front of the awards to preserve them and give them a more appealing look thus dressing them up to increase sales. So, in reality it is just a theory on this one but "could be" one of these.
