This is really strange. Have you ever seen paint over-applied on a beaded frame? In most cases, the paint will "run" up into the recesses of the frame beading to create little fingers. It's a phenomena related to surface tension of the paint and the structure it's applied to.

In this case the paint "line" is almost perfectly straight along the beading. Something I wouldn't expect to see.

But still something amiss I agree

That was the thread I've been looking for! I may be in the minority here but I wouldn't have a problem with this cross knowing that it may have been painted after assembly.
