Simon you raise some valid and thought provoking issues.When you consider those horrendous defensive battles in the east ,particularly 1944/5, the grind up the boot of Italy and the Caen,Falaise arenas etc.
many deserving acts would have been a daily routine almost.It does make you wonder.My thoughts are the issuance for command- to an extent-
belittles those of say lower rank who faced impossible odds and held.
Images of the Cassiono defenders in initial captivity resemble starved old men, the hell they endured was replicated a thousand times in the unknown vastness of Russia.Command ,although crucial ,did not involve personal bravery, rather the reliance on the grunts/landser to carry out
such acts.I suppose this is why perhaps the VC and CMH are set apart.
