I dug my stamped '55' out to have a look. This might be of interest here. It doesn't have a perfect bead pattern as I thought, but the transitional period between perfect and worn dies. You can see evidence of this here and there throughout the cross. Subtle flaws. They were also starting to get sloppy on their finishing of the frames (outside edges).

        Robert-

Thanks for posting those. I’ve come to believe that there was a gradual deterioration of the EK2 dies used by this maker, and yours (and mine) happen to come from a production batch before the dies got really bad.

Just curious - does anyone happen to have an EK1 by J.E. Hammer & Sohne they can post?

Robert P.'s piece looks very flawed to me. I would assume we should see one starting much earlier than that.
I will post up pics of mine as well. Fun and interesting looking at these!

I believe the unmarked cross in posts 75 and 76 is a '55' also. I didn't think so at first, but after carefully looking at it over and over again, I am convinced. The die was really worn at this time, causing the swasi to be really deformed. Some how the dates stayed in good condition. Not too many EK's have those rounded inner corners on the outside of the frame.

                  Hi everyone,

I just received an Ek2 "55" with packet and it looks like Rob Johnson´s EK in thread 17-21. None of the others EKs look alike.

Although some of the paint came off in some parts the swaz and the dates are a bit blurred and deformed, like being under a thick coat of paint. Maybe the cross was overpainted?

                  Please take a look.

                  Best regards,
                  Adolph.

You can see clearly in post #87 where there is a second layer of paint on the swaz.
